Dr. Andrew P. Smith, MD Dr. Andrew P. Smith, MD has been a practicing General Surgeon and Trauma Surgeon in Phoenix and Scottsdale since July of 2000. Dr. Smith and his partner Dr. Deka (below) make up Arrow Surgical Associates. Dr. Smith’s trauma practice began at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center and continues today at St. Josephs Medical Center in downtown Phoenix. His general surgery practice is focused on all three Scottsdale Healthcare Hospitals (Osborn, Shea and Thompson Peak) as well as St. Joe’s Hospital in downtown Phoenix. Specializing in both open surgery as well as advanced laparoscopy, Dr. Smith is well-respected in his field, earning Top Doc honors in 2012.

Dr. Smith served as Section Chief of General Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital from 2006-2008, Chairman of the EMS Committee at Good Samaritan Hospital from 2005-2008, Chairman of Surgery at Paradise Valley Hospital from 2003 to 2005, and served as Teaching Faculty of the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency from 2000 to 2009. He currently serves as Teaching Faculty at St Joseph’s Surgical Residency and the Surgical Residency of the Maricopa Medical Center. He has been published in medical peer review journals on two occasions.

Dr. Smith earned a B.A. from Wheaton College and an M.D. from Rush Medical College. He completed his surgical residency at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency program. He is a member of the Phoenix Surgical Society. He is originally from the Chicago area and is married with 4 children.
Dr. V. Joe Deka, MD FACS Dr. V. Joe Deka, MD FACS completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in both biology and business foundations. This was followed by medical school training at Texas A&M. He went on to complete his residency at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency program. Following completion of his training, Dr. Deka has established a successful general surgery practice in the Scottsdale area with his partner Dr. Andrew Smith as well as serving as a trauma and general surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital in downtown Phoenix.

An ardent supporter of the use of technology in medicine, Dr. Deka was the first to perform robotic single-site cholecystectomy at Scottsdale Healthcare's Shea campus, and routinely performs advanced laparoscopic and robotic procedures for various disease processes. Dr. Deka serves as Teaching Faculty at St. Joseph’s Medical Center as well as for the Maricopa County Program. He has been published in peer review journals and enjoys utilizing the latest technological advances in general surgery. He is one of the founding members of the Robotics Institute at Scottsdale Healthcare, focusing on maintaining standards of excellence in robotic surgery.

Though a true Texan at heart, Dr. Deka has truly found a home in the Valley of the Sun. Outside of work, he and his wife Mary (of Paradise Valley OB/Gyn) enjoy spending time outdoors with their two daughters and their yellow lab Cody. He also both sits on the board and is a member of the Hon Kachina Volunteerism Award Committee, recognizing excellence for those that serve their communities.

Dr. Deka is available for all general surgery consults, with special focus on minimally invasive approaches to the abdomen, breast disease, and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
